Banikas was born in Thessaloniki, Greece, and developed into a prominent junior player, winning a succession of national youth titles. He captured the Greek U-12 Championship in 1990, the Greek U-16 Championship in 1993, and the Greek U-20 Championship in 1996. Following his IM title in 1996, his consistent performances in national and open events secured his Grandmaster title in 2001.
Banikas established historic domestic dominance by winning six consecutive Greek Chess Championships from 2000 through 2005. He added two more national titles to his resume in 2008 and 2009, bringing his total to eight championships.
On the international circuit, Banikas won the 2002 European Rapid Chess Championship in Panormo, Crete, after edging out Sergei Movsesian on tiebreaks. In the same year, he won the 2nd Balkan Individual Championship in Istanbul, Turkey. In 2001, he played a notable match against the chess program Deep Junior in Patras, securing a single-game victory despite losing the overall match. Later in his career, he won the 11th Paleochora International Open in 2018.

- European Team Chess Championship (2001–2017): Banikas represented Greece in nine consecutive editions. His peak individual achievement occurred at the 2005 championship in Gothenburg, Sweden, where he won the individual silver medal on Board 3.
- Chess Olympiads (1996–2002, 2006–2016, 2022): Banikas served as a mainstay for the Greek national team across ten Olympiads. At the 44th Chess Olympiad in Chennai (2022), he scored a highly efficient and undefeated 6.5/9 (+4 =5 -0), drawing games against world-class players including Leinier Dominguez Perez (2754) and Yuriy Kuzubov (2642).
Playing Style, Material Tendencies & Endgame Profiling
Banikas is a dynamic, universal player with a noted inclination toward sharp tactical complications. He prefers complex middlegames where concrete calculation and deep concrete knowledge dictate the flow of the game. Rather than adopting a purely positional or risk-averse profile, Banikas actively steers games toward double-edged paths where structural imbalances exist.
With White, Banikas utilizes central space and aggressive pawn structures, specifically through f4 pawn pushes in dynamic setups. He shows a strong willingness to accept isolated queen's pawns or backward pawn structures in exchange for active piece play, diagonal control, and initiative.
Banikas is highly competent in handling material imbalances, frequently deploying exchange sacrifices to seize control of key files or activate a bishop pair. In defensive scenarios, he relies on active piece play and counter-attacks rather than passive resistance. His endgame play is technically precise, showing a deep mastery of rook-and-pawn endings and knight-versus-bishop conversions, which has allowed him to secure crucial draws and wins in high-pressure team matches.
Opening Repertoire & Theoretical Move Orders
1. As White
Banikas is primarily a d-pawn player, utilizing 1.d4 as his main starting move, though he occasionally transposes using 1.Nf3 or 1.c4. His repertoire centers on classical structures with high tactical volatility.

When facing the Queen's Indian Defense, Banikas opts for traditional lines:
Against the King's Indian Defense, he is historically recognized for playing the aggressive Four Pawns Attack, aiming to crush Black's position in the center:
Against the Modern Benoni, Banikas similarly deploys the highly critical Four Pawns variation to claim space:
2. As Black
As Black, Banikas meets 1.e4 with a counter-attacking approach, relying heavily on the Sicilian Defense.
His primary weapon against 1.e4 is the Sicilian Najdorf, leading to concrete, double-edged middlegames:
He also employs the Sicilian Taimanov as a structurally sound and flexible alternative:
Against 1.d4, Banikas employs the Nimzo-Indian Defense to target White's queenside structure:
Alternatively, he meets 1.d4 with the King's Indian Defense, often handling the Fianchetto Variation to secure king safety and prepare long-term counterplay:
