Overview

Martin Krämer (commonly written as Martin Kraemer) is a German chess Grandmaster born on December 23, 1987. Representing Germany (GER), he holds the FIDE titles of Grandmaster (awarded in September 2012), International Master (2006), and FIDE Master (2004). Krämer achieved his career-high classical FIDE rating of 2587 in April 2019. He is primarily recognized as an active open-tournament competitor, a highly experienced team player in various European leagues, and a former member of the German national team, notably winning the German Rapid Chess Championship in consecutive years.

Biography & Major Career Milestones

Born in Erfurt, Germany, Krämer developed his early chess skills playing for SV Medizin Erfurt, representing the club until the 2005/06 season. He earned his FIDE Master title in 2004, followed by a breakthrough year in 2006 when he won the International German Youth Championship (Internationale Deutsche Jugendmeisterschaft) in Deizisau. His performance earned him the International Master (IM) title in 2006.

For the 2006/07 season, Krämer debuted in the German Chess Bundesliga for Schachfreunde Berlin (SF Berlin). After playing on the top board of Erfurter SK during the 2007/08 season, he returned to SF Berlin for the 2008/09 campaign and has remained a stalwart of the club ever since.

Between 2009 and 2012, Krämer secured his three Grandmaster norms entirely within the competitive German Bundesliga, achieving them across consecutive seasons (2009/10, 2010/11, and 2011/12). FIDE officially approved his Grandmaster (GM) title in September 2012 during the 83rd FIDE Congress in Istanbul.

On the national stage, Krämer achieved major individual successes in rapid play. In September 2013, he won the German Rapid Chess Championship in Gladenbach with a score of 7.5/9. He successfully defended his title the following year in Altenkirchen, scoring 7/9 to claim back-to-back championships.

In international club leagues, Krämer played for ASVÖ Wulkaprodersdorf in the Austrian 1. Bundesliga from 2007/08 until 2017/18. He also joined SK Luzern in the Swiss Nationalliga A in 2014, helping the team secure the Swiss Team Championship title in 2018.
