کے بارے میں
Overview
Leonardo Costa (born January 2008 in Munich, Germany) is a German chess grandmaster representing the German chess federation (GER). He achieved the FIDE Master (FM) title in 2021, the International Master (IM) title in 2024, and was officially awarded the Grandmaster (GM) title by FIDE in July 2025. Costa achieved a career-high classical FIDE rating of 2556 in April 2026. A prominent prodigy and national champion, he made history in 2022 as the youngest-ever winner of the German Chess Championship. He is primarily active as an open tournament and league team player.
Biography & Major Career Milestones
Leonardo Costa began playing chess at the age of four and a half. His early development progressed through the SK Munich Southeast club, where at age six he won a youth cup in the under-12 category. In junior competitions, Costa secured several national youth titles, becoming the German U10 Champion in 2017, the German U12 Vice-Champion in 2019, and the German U14 Champion in August 2021. Following his rating rise past the 2300 threshold in September 2021, he was awarded the FIDE Master title and received special elite youth sponsorship from the German Chess Federation.
In August 2022, at the age of 14, Costa achieved national prominence by winning the 93rd German Chess Championship in Magdeburg. Despite entering the tournament as the 24th seed in a field containing multiple grandmasters and international masters, he captured the title to become the youngest champion in the tournament's history.
Costa earned his IM title in April 2024, having fulfilled his norms at the 2022 German Championship and two tournaments in Hungary. His pursuit of the Grandmaster title involved a series of strong performances in open events and team leagues:
- First GM Norm (Budapest): Achieved at the Budapest Spring Festival A in May 2024, where he scored 7/9 and finished tied for first place.
- Second GM Norm (Austria): Secured during the 2024/25 Austrian Bundesliga season, where he scored 6.5/10.
- Third GM Norm (Grenke): Achieved at the Grenke Chess Open in Karlsruhe in April 2025, scoring 6.5/9.
Following the Grenke Open, Costa's first norm from Budapest was invalidated by FIDE due to administrative issues; the tournament organizers had implemented pairing restrictions to prevent Iranian and Israeli players from facing each other, violating FIDE norm eligibility regulations. Costa was forced to secure an additional qualifying result, which he successfully accomplished in May 2025 at the German Chess Championship in Munich, registering 4.5/9 in the master class with a 2611 Elo performance. His GM title was formally ratified by the FIDE Council on July 18, 2025.
Throughout his career, Costa has been coached by Thomas Beckers, Nadja Jussupow (Yusupov), and Michael Prusikin (who trained him from 2018 to 2023). Since 2024, he has trained under Ukrainian grandmaster Pavel Eljanov. His career has been supported by both the Freestyle Chess Academy and the Weissenhaus Chess Academy.

- Austrian Bundesliga (2024/25): Played on Board 1 for SC MPÖ Maria Saal, scoring 6.5/10.

Playing Style, Material Tendencies & Endgame Profiling
Leonardo Costa exhibits a universal, calculation-intensive style characteristic of modern, engine-trained grandmasters. While initially focused heavily on deep tactical calculation, he has actively adjusted his approach towards long-range strategic planning and defensive prophylaxis.
In the middlegame, Costa relies on concrete, forcing lines. He handles space advantages well and is willing to accept micro-weaknesses in his pawn structures to secure active piece play, particularly in highly dynamic lines like the Open Sicilian or Advance French. His endgame play is technically sound; he has demonstrated proficiency in converting structural and material advantages in queenless middlegames and rook-and-minor-piece endings.
