Overview

Nils Axel Grandelius (born June 3, 1993) is a Swedish chess grandmaster and the top-ranked player of Sweden. FIDE officially awarded him the FIDE Master title in 2007, the International Master title in 2008, and the Grandmaster title in 2010. He achieved his career-peak classical FIDE rating of 2694 in March 2019. Grandelius is primarily established as an elite tournament professional, a mainstay and Board 1 representative of the Swedish national team, and a highly regarded opening theoretician who served as a second to Magnus Carlsen for his 2016 and 2018 World Chess Championship matches.

Grandelius was born in Lund, Sweden, and began playing chess at the age of six. He achieved early international prominence in 2008 when he tied for second place (placing fourth on tiebreak) in the Under-16 division of the European Youth Chess Championship.
