Overview

Sethuraman Panayappan Sethuraman (born February 25, 1993, in Chennai, India) is an Indian chess Grandmaster (GM) who represents the Indian Chess Federation (IND). Officially awarded the GM title in 2011, Sethuraman achieved his career-high FIDE classical rating of 2673 in September 2018. His competitive identity is that of a highly successful tournament professional, two-time Indian National Champion, former Asian Continental Champion, and a vital member of the Indian team that secured its historic first-ever bronze medal at the 41st Chess Olympiad in 2014.

Biography & Major Career Milestones

Introduced to chess at an early age by his father, S. Panaiappan—a chess coach based in Chennai—Sethuraman progressed rapidly through the youth ranks. He secured his first major junior triumph by winning the Asian Under-12 Championship in Singapore in 2004. In 2008, he represented India at the Under-16 Olympiad in Turkey, winning team gold, and finished as runner-up behind compatriot Baskaran Adhiban in the World Youth Chess Championship Under-16 in Vũng Tàu, Vietnam. He followed this by winning the World Under-16 Championship in Antalya, Turkey in 2009.

Sethuraman achieved his grandmaster norms sequentially between 2009 and 2010:

1. Shared second place with 8/10 at the Parsvnath Open in New Delhi (2009).
2. Third place with 6.5/9 at the Paris International Championship (2010).
3. Outright victory with 7/9 at the Voivoda Cup in Legnica, Poland (2010).

FIDE officially ratified his Grandmaster title in 2011.

In December 2014, Sethuraman won the Indian National Premier Championship in Kottayam, remaining undefeated with a score of 8.5/12. Nine years later, at the 60th edition in Pune (2023), he reclaimed the National Champion title with an unbeaten score of 9.5/11.

At the international level, he won the Asian Chess Championship (Asian Continental) in Tashkent in 2016, qualifying him for the Chess World Cup. In February 2018, he secured a major second-place finish at the Aeroflot Open in Moscow with a score of 6.5/9. He also won the Weissenhaus Young Masters.

Sethuraman has completed several successful campaigns in the FIDE World Cup:

• 2015 FIDE World Cup (Baku): Knocked out Sanan Sjugirov (1.5–0.5) in the first round and compatriot Pentala Harikrishna (1.5–0.5) in the second, before being eliminated in the third round by Shakhriyar Mamedyarov (1.5–2.5).
• 2017 FIDE World Cup (Tbilisi): Knocked out former FIDE World Champion Ruslan Ponomariov (1.5–0.5) in the first round and Pentala Harikrishna (1.5–0.5) in the second round. In the third round, he pushed top-tier GM Anish Giri to rapid tiebreaks before being eliminated.
• 2019 FIDE World Cup (Khanty-Mansiysk): Competed in the first round against Israel's Tamir Nabaty, bouncing back from an opening loss to win the second classical game before bowing out in the rapid tiebreaks.

• 41st Chess Olympiad (2014, Tromsø): Represented India on Board 2. He scored 7.5/10 with an elite tournament performance rating of 2757, which was instrumental in earning the Indian team its first-ever bronze medal.

He is known to coordinate aggressive kingside pawn storms or castle long to set up dynamic attacks.

In endgames, Sethuraman relies on active king activity and direct coordinate play. He transitions effectively from sharp, theoretical openings into queenless middlegames or active major-piece endgames, where his calculation speed remains a core asset.
