Biography & Major Career Milestones
Henríquez Villagra established himself early in the junior ranks, winning the 2013 Pan-American Youth Chess Championship (Under-18) in Poços de Caldas, Brazil, which directly earned him his International Master (IM) title. He continued his youth success by winning the 2014 Pan-American Junior Championship and finishing tied for third place in the 2014 World Under-18 Championship. In the Chilean Chess Championship, Henríquez Villagra finished as runner-up in 2014 before going on to win the national title three times, in 2015, 2018, and 2019.
In 2015, Henríquez Villagra tied for second place at the FIDE Zonal 2.5 in Asunción, Paraguay, and subsequently won a playoff against three grandmasters to qualify for the 2015 FIDE World Cup in Baku. At the event, he secured a major upset in the first round by defeating former World Championship challenger Boris Gelfand in the rapid playoff stage, which was widely noted as one of the biggest upsets in the history of the tournament. He was subsequently eliminated in the second round by Peruvian GM Julio Granda Zúñiga.
In March 2023, Henríquez Villagra won the FIDE Zonal 2.5 in Asunción, qualifying for the 2023 FIDE World Cup in Baku. In the first round, he defeated Daniel Cawdery, advancing to face GM Vasyl Ivanchuk in the second round, where he drew both classical games before being eliminated in the tiebreaks. At the 2025 FIDE World Cup in Goa, India, he bounced back from a first-round classical loss on time to defeat IM Uurtsaikh Agibileg in the tiebreaks, before drawing both classical games in the second round and exiting against GM Alexey Sarana. Playing Style, Material Tendencies & Endgame Profiling
Henríquez Villagra's playing style is fundamentally positional and pragmatic, characterized by slow maneuvering and careful structure management. He does not shy away from slow, hypermodern openings as White, using them to pressure opponents in prolonged strategic battles.
In terms of material tendencies, Henríquez Villagra shows high proficiency in asymmetrical material balances. This technical capacity is especially highlighted in his handling of endgame transitions. For example, his game against Cem Kaan Gokerkan (Barcelona, 2019) demonstrated his precise coordination of two minor pieces to outplay an active rook. Additionally, during the 2025 World Cup tiebreaks, he successfully navigated a highly technical endgame to demonstrate how a pair of knights can triumph over the bishop pair. While highly resilient in passive or worse positions, he relies heavily on active piece play and precise endgame calculation to convert minor structural advantages.
Opening Repertoire & Theoretical Move Orders
1. As White
Henríquez Villagra uses a flexible first-move strategy as White, splitting his choices between hypermodern flank systems and classical king's pawn openings.
In flank setups, he often favors the Hungarian Opening and the King's Indian Attack, seeking to avoid heavily analyzed theoretical lines and steering the game toward structural maneuvering:
When opening with the king's pawn, he frequently implements anti-Sicilian lines, particularly the Canal-Sokolsky Attack to curb Black's counterplay:
Against the Caro-Kann Defense, he consistently utilizes the Advance Variation, frequently opting for the Tal Variation with an early h4 thrust to restrict Black's light-squared bishop:
Against the French Defense, he sometimes employs the Chigorin Variation with an early queen placement:
2. As Black
As Black, Henríquez Villagra demonstrates a solid defensive repertoire, choosing robust mainlines with potential for active counterplay.
Against 1.e4, his primary weapon is the Caro-Kann Defense, where he often adopts the Classical Variation to ensure a solid pawn structure and safe king:
He also employs the Sicilian Defense, particularly the Richter-Rauzer Variation of the Classical Sicilian, allowing for sharp, asymmetrical middlegame positions:
Against 1.d4, he relies on the solid setups of the Slav Defense to secure his central footprint:
He also occasionally adopts the King's Indian Defence when looking for more dynamic and unbalanced play:
