Overview
Xiangyu Xu is a Chinese chess grandmaster born on September 19, 1999, in Taiyuan, Shanxi Province, China. Representing the Chinese Chess Federation (CHN), Xu was officially awarded the Grandmaster (GM) title in 2017. He achieved his career-high classical FIDE rating of 2636 in May 2024. Xu is a highly prominent player in Chinese team and individual chess, recognized as the 2026 Chinese Chess Champion, a regular competitor in the Chinese Chess League, and an accomplished coach and captain within the Chinese national team system.
Biography & Major Career Milestones
Xu developed his early chess career in China's national youth system. By early 2017, he attained the required FIDE rating and norm criteria for the Grandmaster title. His title norms were completed in domestic Chinese tournaments, and his title was officially ratified at the 88th FIDE Congress in Antalya, Turkey, in October 2017. Shortly after, Xu represented China at the 2017 FIDE World Junior Under-20 Championship in Tarvisio, Italy, where he scored 7.5/11, finishing in a tie for the top positions and ultimately placing 21st on tiebreaks.
At the senior international level, Xu made a significant impact during his debut at the 2019 FIDE World Cup in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia. Entering as a lower seed, he executed consecutive match upsets by defeating GM Bu Xiangzhi (3.5–2.5 after rapid tiebreaks) in the first round and GM Ernesto Inarkiev (1.5–0.5) in the second round, before being eliminated in the third round by GM Alexander Grischuk.
On the domestic circuit, Xu established himself as one of China's most consistent grandmasters. He finished on the podium at the Chinese Chess Championship multiple times, securing third place in 2022 and 2024, and finishing runner-up in 2023. In May 2026, Xu achieved his greatest domestic milestone by winning the Chinese Chess Championship in Xinghua. He finished undefeated with a score of 8.5/11 (+6 =5 -0), defeating GM Li Di in the final round to secure his first national crown and book a debut spot on the Chinese team for the 2026 Chess Olympiad.
In international open tournament play, Xu achieved a major victory at the 53rd Rilton Cup (2025/2026) in Stockholm, Sweden. He dominated the event to finish undefeated with 8/9, a full point ahead of the field, registering his first title in the 2026–2027 FIDE Circuit cycle.
Beyond his individual play, Xu has a notable reputation as an elite analytical second and team captain. He served as a second for former Women's World Champion Tan Zhongyi and acts as a captain and coordinator for the Chinese national contingent, working closely as a regular coach and training partner for super-GM Wei Yi.

- Chinese Chess League Division A (2018–2025): Represented the Chengdu Beilei team on high boards. He won multiple league division titles and was awarded the "Best Player" of the Chinese Chess League in 2022.
- 46th Chess Olympiad (2026): Selected to make his debut appearance on Board 3/4 for the Chinese national team following his national championship triumph.
Playing Style, Material Tendencies & Endgame Profiling
Xu is a highly technical and positional modern player. Consistent with the contemporary Chinese school, his chess is structurally solid, prioritizing long-term safety, coordination, and king safety before initiating dynamic operations.
Xu prefers setups with a stable center and space advantages. He has a strong preference for simplifying into queenless middlegames or slightly favorable endgames, where his meticulous endgame conversion excels. He demonstrates deep proficiency in active rook endings and technical minor-piece configurations, frequently grinding down opponents from balanced or microscopic structural advantages, as illustrated in his undefeated tournament victories at the 2025/26 Rilton Cup and 2026 Chinese Championship. However, when playing with the black pieces, Xu is highly comfortable adopting asymmetric pawn structures (such as the Sicilian Richter-Rauzer or Grünfeld) to provoke concrete tactical counterplay.
Opening Repertoire & Theoretical Move Orders
1. As White
Xu's white repertoire focuses primarily on closed openings, relying on queen’s pawn structures and English setups that yield positional pressure.
He is a regular practitioner of the London System, using it to bypass extensive theoretical lines while maintaining a solid center:
Against classical setups, he frequently transposes into the Catalan Opening or the Exchange Variation of the Queen’s Gambit Declined to establish early central control:
In addition to 1.d4, Xu relies heavily on the English Opening to navigate toward flexible, reversed setups where structural understanding dictates the middlegame:
2. As Black
As Black, Xu balances solid theoretical systems against 1.e4 with highly dynamic counter-attacking options against 1.d4.
Against 1.e4, his absolute primary defensive shield is Petrov's Defense, which aligns with his preference for symmetry and structural resilience:
When seeking dynamic play or asymmetric middlegames, he employs the Richter-Rauzer variation of the Classical Sicilian:
Against 1.d4, Xu's main dynamic weapon is the Grünfeld Defense, where he target's White's center through rapid piece activity:
