About
Overview
Jeffery Xiong (born October 30, 2000) is an American chess grandmaster who represents the United States. He was awarded the Grandmaster (GM) title by FIDE in September 2015 at the age of 14, making him one of the youngest grandmasters in United States history. Xiong achieved a career-high classical FIDE rating of 2712 in November 2019. A former elite prodigy, he is a highly active tournament professional, former World Junior Chess Champion, and a recurring competitor in elite classical and team events.
Biography & Major Career Milestones
Xiong began playing chess at the age of five and quickly distinguished himself in national scholastic events. In 2008, he began training with Grandmaster Babakuli Annakov. He later entered the Kasparov Chess Foundation's "Young Stars" program, receiving intensive instruction from grandmasters Alexander Chernin and Gabor Kallai, alongside training sessions with former World Champion Garry Kasparov.
Xiong's international rise began at the 2010 World Youth Chess Championships in Porto Carras, Greece, where he won the silver medal in the Under-10 category, earning him the FIDE Master (FM) title. He fulfilled the requirements for the International Master (IM) title by scoring norms at the 4th Annual Golden State Open in January 2013, the UT Dallas Spring FIDE Open in March 2013, and the 7th Annual Philadelphia Open in March 2013, with the title confirmed in 2014 when his rating surpassed 2400.
Xiong achieved his three Grandmaster norms in rapid succession:
- The Chicago Open in May 2014 (scoring 6/9).
- The UT Dallas Open in November 2014 (scoring 6/9).
- The Chicago Open in May 2015, where he took clear first place with 7/9, defeating a strong field and pushing his rating past the 2500 threshold.
The GM title was officially confirmed in September 2015, when Xiong was 14 years and 7 months old.
In 2016, Xiong secured three consecutive major tournament victories: the B Group (Premier) of the Capablanca Memorial, the U.S. Closed Junior Championship, and the World Junior Chess Championship in Bhubaneswar, India, where he finished undefeated with 10.5/13, a full point ahead of runner-up Vladislav Artemiev.
Xiong won the Saint Louis Spring Classic (A Group) in 2018 with an undefeated score of 6.5/9 and a performance rating of 2819. He defended this title in 2019, winning the event again with an undefeated 6/9.
At the 2019 FIDE World Cup in Khanty-Mansiysk, Xiong—seeded 31st—engineered a deep run to the quarterfinals by defeating Igor Lysyj, Parham Maghsoodloo, and elite grandmasters Anish Giri and Jan-Krzysztof Duda, before being eliminated by the eventual tournament winner, Teimour Radjabov. Following this performance, his FIDE rating crossed the 2700 barrier, peaking at 2712 in November 2019. In October 2020, Xiong finished second in the U.S. Chess Championship behind Wesley So. At the 2025 FIDE World Cup in Goa, India, Xiong reached the third round (last 64) before being eliminated by Le Quang Liem.

Playing Style, Material Tendencies & Endgame Profiling
Xiong is a classical, positionally minded player whose style is characterized by extreme solidity, patient maneuvering, and high technical precision. Rather than seeking early tactical complications, Xiong tends to construct balanced, low-risk positions, keeping his king highly secure and aiming for small, incremental advantages. Former World Champion Garry Kasparov highlighted his style as "very solid, very mature chess," while Grandmaster Yasser Seirawan remarked on Xiong's exceptional composure, well-roundedness, and physical stamina in prolonged games.
Xiong is highly proficient in handling minor-piece imbalances, showing a preference for structured positional blockades. He is comfortable accepting passive defensive roles when necessary, demonstrating steady nerves under pressure. In the transition to the endgame, Xiong excels at converting microscopic advantages, particularly in rook-and-pawn endings and opposite-colored bishop endgames. His technical conversion is built on precise computer-era calculation combined with a pragmatic approach to reducing risk.
Opening Repertoire & Theoretical Move Orders
1. As White
Xiong primarily employs 1.e4 as his principal opening weapon, though he frequently transposes to 1.d4 and 1.c4 lines at the super-grandmaster level to target specific opponents.
Against open games (1...e5), Xiong frequently utilizes the Ruy Lopez, often opting for the solid d3-lines to bypass deeply analyzed theoretical variations of the Berlin Defense:
He also relies heavily on the Italian Game (Giuoco Piano) for a slow, maneuvering middlegame struggle:
In the Four Knights Game, Xiong favors the Scotch Variation, which has yielded him high scoring percentages in database games:
Against the Sicilian Defense (1...c5), Xiong avoids the sharpest open variations in favor of anti-Sicilian setups. Against 2...Nc6, his primary weapon is the Rossolimo Attack:
Against 2...d6, he utilizes the Moscow Variation:
When opening with 1.d4, Xiong relies on the Catalan Opening to generate long-term positional pressure on the queenside:
He also employs the London System as a reliable, solid setup:
2. As Black
Against 1.e4, Xiong relies on two distinct defensive setups: the Berlin Defense in the Ruy Lopez for maximum solidity, and the Sicilian Najdorf when playing for asymmetrical counterplay.
His Berlin Defense setup frequently leads to the classical Berlin Wall endgame:
In the Sicilian Najdorf, he contests the main lines, demonstrating deep theoretical preparation:
Against 1.d4, Xiong's primary defensive choices are the Grünfeld Defense and the Queen's Gambit Declined. Coached by Grünfeld expert Yaroslav Zherebukh, Xiong plays the active Exchange lines of the Grünfeld:
In the Queen's Gambit Declined, Xiong favors highly solid setups, such as the Tartakower or the Exchange Variation:
Against English (1.c4) or Réti (1.Nf3) openings, Xiong typically answers with a Symmetrical English setup, aiming for a rapid central counter-strike:
