Martirosyan reached a career-high classical FIDE rating of 2708 in November 2023, ranking 34th in the world. He established himself as a prodigy in youth categories, claiming European and World Youth titles, and has since developed into a premier classical tournament competitor, rapid and blitz specialist, and a key member of the Armenian national team.
Biography & Major Career Milestones
Martirosyan was born in Byuravan, in the Ararat Province of Armenia, and distinguished himself early in junior championships. In 2011, he won the European Under-12 Chess Championship in Albena, Bulgaria, which led FIDE to award him the FIDE Master title. He secured the European Under-14 Chess Championship in 2013 and achieved his major junior breakthrough in 2016 by winning the World Under-16 Youth Chess Championship in Khanty-Mansiysk. Having gained his International Master title in 2016, his rapid progress culminated in the Grandmaster title in 2017.
In January 2018, Martirosyan won the 78th Armenian Chess Championship (Highest League) in Yerevan, scoring an undefeated 7/10 to earn his spot on the national team. Later that year, he won the Zurich Christmas Open on tiebreaks over a field that included Rasmus Svane and S. L. Narayanan. In February 2019, he shared first place at the Aeroflot Open in Moscow with Estonian Grandmaster Kaido Külaots, finishing second on tiebreaks.
Martirosyan achieved a major senior breakthrough at the FIDE World Cup 2021 in Sochi. Entering as the 59th seed, he upset sixth-seeded Shakhriyar Mamedyarov in the third-round rapid tiebreaks. He subsequently defeated Ante Brkić in the fourth round before being eliminated in the fifth round by Amin Tabatabaei.
In December 2022, Martirosyan shared second place with Hikaru Nakamura at the FIDE World Blitz Chess Championship in Almaty, Kazakhstan. His rapid and blitz mastery was further demonstrated at the 2024 Biel Chess Festival, where he claimed first place in the rapid chess tournament. In October 2023, Martirosyan crossed the 2700 Elo live rating threshold during the European Chess Club Cup, briefly making him Armenia's top-rated player.
His strong performances continued into recent years. At the World Blitz Chess Championship in Doha in December 2025, he defeated former World Champion Magnus Carlsen. In March 2026, he secured first place on tiebreaks at the 19th Agzamov Memorial in Tashkent, finishing level on 7½/10 with Artem Uskov.

Playing Style, Material Tendencies & Endgame Profiling
Martirosyan is widely characterized as a highly dynamic, aggressive, and tactical player. His quick calculation and sharp decision-making make him exceptionally strong in rapid and blitz formats. He is a concrete computer-era calculator who relies heavily on deep home preparation assisted by high-performance cloud engines.
Martirosyan actively seeks dynamic imbalances from the opening, frequently accepting structural weaknesses—such as isolated queen's pawns or hanging pawns—in exchange for piece activity and the initiative. His treatment of king safety is highly concrete; he is willing to accept open lines near his own king if it grants him counterplay or attacking prospects on the opposite flank.
In the endgame, Martirosyan possesses robust technical skills, typically excelling at converting advantages through active king play and precise pawn structure manipulation. However, his highly tense, calculation-heavy style has occasionally led to high-profile slips under severe time trouble. A notable example occurred in his fifth-round match against Amin Tabatabaei at the 2021 World Cup, where a minor endgame inaccuracy in a drawn pawn structure led to his elimination.
Opening Repertoire & Theoretical Move Orders
1. As White
Martirosyan primarily opens with 1.d4, though he occasionally employs 1.e4. His 1.d4 repertoire features a mix of mainstream setups and sharp, highly concrete sidelines designed to bypass heavy theoretical mainlines.
A primary weapon is the Trompowsky Attack, used to create asymmetric middlegame play:
Against the active 2...Ne4 reply, he has popularized a sharp, engine-approved treatment involving an early h-pawn thrust:
In open queen's pawn structures, he frequently employs the Torre Attack to secure a stable development scheme:
When opening with 1.e4, he routinely enters the mainlines of the Open Sicilian, inviting sharp tactical battles:
2. As Black
Against 1.e4, Martirosyan often relies on the French Defense, seeking a solid yet counter-attacking structure:
Against 1.d4, his repertoire is highly diverse, combining theoretical solidity with sharp, unbalanced defenses. He frequently uses the Nimzo-Indian Defense to establish early control over the light squares:
He is well-known for his application of the Chebanenko variation of the Slav Defense, maintaining structural flexibility on the queenside:
Additionally, Martirosyan has successfully deployed the Chigorin Defense to provoke immediate center tension and create early piece activity:
In the mainlines of the Chigorin, he frequently plays:
