Overview
Vasif Durarbayli (born February 24, 1992, in Sumgait, Azerbaijan) is an Azerbaijani chess Grandmaster (GM) who has been a prominent fixture in international and national tournament chess since his youth. He was awarded the International Master (IM) title in 2007 and achieved the Grandmaster title in 2010. Durarbayli reached his career-high classical FIDE rating of 2638 in May 2022. As a dual representative of both Azerbaijani national chess and the elite United States collegiate chess circuit, he is a two-time Azerbaijani national champion and has consistently played a vital role in international team championships.
Biography & Major Career Milestones
Durarbayli began his chess career in 1999 at the age of six. He quickly established himself as a dominant junior talent, capturing second place at the European Youth Chess Championship in the Under-14 category in 2006, followed by winning the World Youth Chess Championship in the same age category later that year. In 2010, he continued his junior success by winning the European Youth Chess Championship in the Under-18 division.
Durarbayli earned his IM title in September 2007, securing norms at the Azerbaijani Chess Championship in 2006, the 17th Abu Dhabi Chess Festival, and the 3rd President's Cup in Baku. His GM title was officially ratified in 2010 after completing his final norms and surpassing the 2500 rating threshold.
In 2014, Durarbayli joined the prestigious SPICE (Susan Polgar Institute for Chess Excellence) program at Webster University in St. Louis, Missouri, where he studied Economics and served as the President of the Student Government Association. During his tenure at Webster, he helped lead the university's chess team to victory in the President's Cup (the "Final Four" of US collegiate chess) on three occasions.
His major individual open tournament victories include winning the St. Louis Summer Classic (Group A) in 2018 and the Chicago Open in 2019. In late 2019, he finished as the sole runner-up in the Sunway Sitges Chess Festival after winning a series of playoff encounters. On the national stage, Durarbayli secured his first Azerbaijani Chess Championship in Nakhchivan in May 2021, and won the national title for a second time in 2023.
Durarbayli's most notable individual world-stage performance came during the 2021 FIDE World Cup in Sochi. Entering as the 93rd seed, he staged a major run to reach the Round of 16 (Round 5). He defeated Dmitry V. Sklyarov (1.5–0.5) in the first round, upset 36th-seed Alexandr Predke (3–1) in the second round, defeated 29th-seed David Navara (1.5–0.5) in the third round, and eliminated the rising Uzbek star Nodirbek Abdusattorov (4–2 after rapid tiebreaks) in the fourth round, before finally falling to Vidit Gujrathi. He returned to the World Cup in 2023, where he defeated Leonel Figueredo Losada in the first round and was eliminated in the second round by Jules Moussard.
