Overview

Daniel Dardha (born October 1, 2005) is a Belgian chess Grandmaster (GM) representing the Belgian Chess Federation (BEL). He achieved the Grandmaster title in 2021 at the age of 15, becoming the youngest grandmaster in his country's history. Dardha achieved his career-high FIDE classical rating of 2665 in March 2025. He is primarily active as a professional tournament player, a four-time Belgian Chess Champion, and a top-board representative for the Belgian national team in international competitions.

Biography & Major Career Milestones

Daniel Dardha was born in Mortsel, Belgium, into a family with deep chess roots. He was introduced to the game and primarily coached by his father, FM Arben Dardha, a former Albanian Under-20 Champion, with additional mentorship from GM Ivan Sokolov. His grandfather, Bardhyl Dardha, was also a chess coach in Berat, Albania. Showing early chess aptitude, Dardha won the Belgian U14 Blitz Chess Championship in 2017 at the age of 12.

In August 2019, at just 13 years old, Dardha won the Belgian Chess Championship in Charleroi, finishing ahead of three grandmasters to become the youngest champion in the event's history. Shortly after, in October 2019, he officially earned the International Master (IM) title.

Dardha secured his second Belgian Chess Championship in 2021 and finalized his grandmaster requirements, earning the GM title in November 2021 at the age of 15. He defended his national title in 2022 to claim his third championship. In December 2022, he tied for 15th place (20th on tiebreaks) at the World Blitz Chess Championship in Almaty, Kazakhstan, defeating established grandmasters such as Vladimir Fedoseev and Sam Shankland.

At the 2023 European Individual Chess Championship, Dardha won the bronze medal, placing third behind champion Alexey Sarana and silver medalist Kirill Shevchenko. Later that year, he competed in the 2023 FIDE World Cup, defeating GM Goh Wei Ming in the first round before falling to GM Vincent Keymer in the second.

In 2024, Dardha won his fourth Belgian Chess Championship in Lier. He went on to win the 2024 Djerba Masters on tiebreaks over Hans Niemann, followed by a victory at the 2024 Sardinia World Chess Festival, which he secured after a crucial final-round win against GM Alan Pichot. In November 2024, Dardha claimed the silver medal at the European Individual Chess Championship in Petrovac, Montenegro. Entering the final round undefeated and a half-point behind leader Aleksandar Indjic, Dardha played a sharp direct encounter to a draw, securing his position as the European Vice-Champion with an 8.5/11 score.

On June 9, 2025, Dardha completed a grueling 50-board clock simultaneous exhibition in Deinze, Belgium, setting a potential world record. Facing opponents with an average rating of 1834, he scored 43.5 out of 50 points, finishing with 40 wins, 7 draws, and 3 losses.
