About
Overview
Javokhir Sindarov (born December 8, 2005) is an Uzbekistani chess grandmaster who is widely recognized as one of the elite competitors of the modern chess era. Representing the Uzbekistan chess federation (UZB), he achieved the Grandmaster (GM) title in October 2018 at the age of 12 years, 10 months, and 8 days, which made him the second-youngest player in chess history to earn the title at the time. Sindarov achieved a career-high classical FIDE rating of 2776 on the May 2026 list, ranking him among the top five players in the world. He established himself as a world-class competitor after winning the 2025 FIDE World Cup and subsequently dominating the 2026 FIDE Candidates Tournament, qualifying to challenge Gukesh Dommaraju for the World Chess Championship.
Biography & Major Career Milestones
Sindarov was born in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, and was introduced to chess at the age of four and a half by his grandfather, Komil Sindarov. He quickly demonstrated prodigious talent, winning the Under-7 category of the Asian School Chess Championship in 2012, followed by a gold medal in the Under-9 category at the 2014 World School Chess Championship in rapid and blitz.
Sindarov’s progression to the Grandmaster title was exceptionally rapid. He obtained the International Master (IM) title in October 2017. He secured his first Grandmaster norm at the Alekhine Memorial in June 2018. His second norm followed shortly after at the World Junior Chess Championship in September 2018 in Turkey, where his performance also pushed his FIDE rating past the 2500 threshold. On October 16, 2018, Sindarov completed his third and final GM norm at the First Saturday GM Tournament in Budapest, Hungary, finishing with a score of 7/9 to secure the title as a pre-teen.
Nationally, Sindarov won the Uzbekistan National Chess Championship in both 2019 and 2021. He officially crossed the 2700 Elo rating barrier for the first time in late 2023. In May 2025, he won the prestigious TePe Sigeman & Co Chess Tournament, scoring 4.5/7. Later that year, he achieved a monumental career breakthrough by winning the 2025 FIDE World Cup in Baku, defeating Chinese Grandmaster Wei Yi in the finals. This historic victory earned him direct qualification to the 2026 FIDE Candidates Tournament.
In April 2026, Sindarov delivered a historic performance at the FIDE Candidates Tournament in Cyprus, securing first place with an undefeated score of 10/14 (+6 =8). This dominant performance earned him the right to play the 2026 World Chess Championship match.

Playing Style, Material Tendencies & Endgame Profiling
Sindarov is a prototypical concrete, computer-era calculator, possessing immense tactical sharpness and deep opening preparation. While he displays a highly dynamic and aggressive tactical vision—typical of his rapid rise as a youth prodigy—his mature style is highly universal, allowing him to navigate complex strategic endgames with precision.
Sindarov is exceptionally comfortable handling space advantages and initiative-driven positions. He frequently uses precise pawn breaks to destabilize his opponent’s structures. In King's Indian defense setups, he is highly proficient in handling asymmetrical middlegames where he orchestrates complex kingside attacks, often utilizing deep exchange sacrifices or piece coordination to exploit weakened dark squares around the enemy king.
In defense, Sindarov relies on active counterplay rather than passive resilience, preferring to generate tactical complications even in slightly worse positions. In the endgame, he excels at converting micro-advantages, demonstrating precise technique in active rook endings, managing the bishop pair in open endgames, and squeezing victories from queenless middlegames.
Opening Repertoire & Theoretical Move Orders
1. As White
Sindarov's primary choice as White is 1.e4, where he relies on deeply researched mainline theoretical setups as well as sharp anti-Sicilian systems.
Against 1...e5, Sindarov heavily favors the Italian Game, steering the game into the slow, maneuvering lines of the Giuoco Pianissimo:
Against the Sicilian Defense, he regularly employs the Closed Sicilian to bypass main-line theory, but is equally prepared to enter open, highly theoretical lines such as the Najdorf:
He also utilizes the Prins Variation / Venice Attack against the Sicilian:
Against the French Defense, Sindarov often relies on the Two Knights Variation to create early asymmetry:
Against the Caro-Kann Defense, he regularly employs flexible setups including the Two Knights or the Advance Variation:
2. As Black
As Black, Sindarov is known for a highly dynamic, fighting repertoire, utilizing hyper-modern defenses against queen's pawn openings and theoretical mainlines against king's pawn openings.
Against 1.e4, he employs the Ruy Lopez or relies on sharp Sicilians, frequently opting for the Najdorf or the Taimanov setups:
Against 1.d4, his signature weapon is the King's Indian Defense, which he plays with deep theoretical understanding and aggressive intent, using it to secure full-blooded fighting positions:
Alternatively, against 1.d4, he employs the highly solid and resilient Semi-Slav Defense:
