Felix Blohberger (born August 20, 2002) is an Austrian chess grandmaster. Based in Vienna, Blohberger represents the Austrian Chess Federation (AUT) in international competitions. He was awarded the FIDE Master (FM) title in 2016, the International Master (IM) title in 2018, and completed the requirements for the Grandmaster (GM) title in 2021, with the title officially conferred in 2022. His career-high classical FIDE rating of 2548 was reached in May 2026. He is primarily known as a highly active tournament professional, a key representative for the Austrian national team, a theoretical author, and a prominent chess coach and content creator.
Biography & Major Career Milestones
Blohberger began his competitive chess career in Vienna, participating in local youth events after learning the game in kindergarten. His international breakthroughs came in junior events, culminating in winning the European Under-16 Rapid Chess Championship in 2018 and finishing fourth in the European Under-16 Classical Chess Championship the same year.
Blohberger earned his three required norms for the International Master title in close succession:
- The 2018 European Individual Championship in Batumi, Georgia, where he scored 5/11 against a field averaging 2544.
- The 2017/18 Austrian 1. Bundesliga playing for SK Ottakring.
- The 2018 Chess Masters Vienna.
His transition to the Grandmaster title was fueled by a strong run of form in 2021. Blohberger secured his GM norms through the following performances:
- June 2021: Prague International Chess Festival Open, where he tied for first place with Polish GM Marcin Krzyzanowski on 7/9 points.
- July 2021: Vienna GM tournament, where he tied for first place with 6.5/9 points.
- October 2021: German Bundesliga, representing Schachfreunde Berlin, where he scored 3.5/4 in the final phase, including a key victory over GM Predrag Nikolic.
At the age of 19, Blohberger officially became Austria's youngest grandmaster at the time of his title confirmation in 2022.
In August 2022, Blohberger won the Austrian Classical Chess Championship in Vienna, scoring 6.5/9 and edging out Andreas Diermair and Dominik Horvath on tiebreaks. His individual international tournament victories also include taking clear first in the Spring Chess Classic Group B in Saint Louis in April 2023 and winning the Sligo Chess & Culture Festival in Ireland in April 2026.
Blohberger has represented Austria in two FIDE World Cups:
- 2023 World Cup (Baku): Played in the first round against GM Dimitrios Mastrovasilis, losing in the blitz tiebreak matches.
- 2025 World Cup (Goa): Defeated Romanian GM Constantin Lupulescu 1.5–0.5 in the first round, before being eliminated in the second round by Chinese GM Yu Yangyi in blitz tiebreaks.
Elite Team & Event Performance
- 44th Chess Olympiad (2022): Represented Austria in Chennai on the national team. In Round 4, he defeated GM Liviu-Dieter Nisipeanu (then rated 2642) to secure a historic 2.5–1.5 team victory over Germany.
- 45th Chess Olympiad (2024): Represented Austria on the national team in Budapest, Hungary.
- European Team Chess Championship (2025): Represented Austria on board three in Batumi, Georgia, scoring key results including a draw against Italian GM Francesco Sonis.
- Mitropa Cup (2019): Represented Austria in Radenci, Slovenia.
- German Bundesliga: Plays for Schachfreunde Berlin, scoring notable performances on middle and upper boards.
- Austrian Bundesliga: Represents SK Ottakring, serving as a core player for his hometown club in the national premier league.
Playing Style, Material Tendencies & Endgame Profiling
Blohberger is a concrete, preparation-centric calculator typical of the modern computer-trained generation. His playing style leans toward strategic clarity and positional maneuvering, backed by deep, forced tactical calculations. He prioritizes king safety and piece coordination, preferring structures where his pieces command clear files or diagonals rather than highly speculative, open-ended king hunts.
A standout feature of Blohberger's identity is his technical mastery of the endgame. He has published extensive specialized materials and instructional courses on precise endgame archetypes:
- Opposite-Colored Bishop Endgames: He specializes in conversion techniques in imbalanced opposite-colored bishop structures, utilizing advanced king marches and spatial dominance to force wins.
- Pure Bishop Endgames: Highly precise in evaluating pawn majorities and technical conversion in pure minor-piece scenarios.
- Rook Endgames: Known for active king defense and generating counterplay in passive or slightly worse rook endings.
His defensive profile is highly resilient; in slightly worse positions, Blohberger tends to consolidate structures, exchange active minor pieces, and steer the game into simplified, technically defensible endgames where his theoretical knowledge is most effective.
Opening Repertoire & Theoretical Move Orders
Blohberger has established a reputation as an opening-theory specialist. His repertoire is heavily researched and relies on strategic flexibility and deep computer preparation.
1. As White
Blohberger’s White repertoire focuses primarily on 1.Nf3 and 1.d4 structures, steering games into positional channels.
-
The Réti Opening (1.Nf3): This is Blohberger's primary strategic weapon. He has published a complete theoretical repertoire on this setup, often transitioning into Catalan-style or double-fianchetto lines.
-
Anti-King's Indian / Anti-Grünfeld 1.d4 Systems: Against Indian setups, Blohberger often utilizes a rapid knight deployment to d2 to avoid hypermodern mainlines, intending a quick e4 thrust.
2. As Black
Blohberger employs direct counter-attacking weapons against 1.e4 and highly structured systems against 1.d4 and 1.c4.
-
Against 1.e4: Blohberger utilizes the Classical French Defense as his primary defensive anchor, on which he has co-authored specialized material.
-
Against 1.d4: His main weapon is the King's Indian Defense, relying on dynamic counterplay and complex middlegame strategies.
-
Against 1.c4 (English Opening): Blohberger advocates an aggressive approach with 1...e5, quickly placing the dark-squared bishop on b4 to disrupt White's normal developmental schemes.
