About
Overview
Nils Axel Grandelius (born June 3, 1993) is a Swedish chess grandmaster and the top-ranked player of Sweden. FIDE officially awarded him the FIDE Master title in 2007, the International Master title in 2008, and the Grandmaster title in 2010. He achieved his career-peak classical FIDE rating of 2694 in March 2019. Grandelius is primarily established as an elite tournament professional, a mainstay and Board 1 representative of the Swedish national team, and a highly regarded opening theoretician who served as a second to Magnus Carlsen for his 2016 and 2018 World Chess Championship matches.
Biography & Major Career Milestones
Grandelius was born in Lund, Sweden, and began playing chess at the age of six. He achieved early international prominence in 2008 when he tied for second place (placing fourth on tiebreak) in the Under-16 division of the European Youth Chess Championship. Later that year, he won the Olomouc Open in the Czech Republic with a score of 6.5/9, securing his first Grandmaster norm. In 2009, he again shared first place at the Olomouc Open, achieving his second GM norm. Grandelius earned his third and final GM norm at the 40th Bosna International Tournament in Sarajevo in 2010, completing the requirements for the Grandmaster title at age 17.
During his remaining junior years, Grandelius took the bronze medal at the 2010 World Youth Chess Championship in the Under-18 category. In 2011, he secured the gold medal in the Under-18 European Youth Chess Championship in Albena, Bulgaria. At the 2012 World Junior Chess Championship in Athens, he placed fourth on tiebreaks in a field that included Alexander Ipatov, Richard Rapport, and Ding Liren.
Transitioning to senior play, Grandelius achieved several major career milestones:
- Swedish Chess Championship (2015): Won the national title in Sunne after defeating Emanuel Berg in a playoff match (both had tied for first in the main tournament with 6.5/9).
- Abu Dhabi Masters (2015): Won the prestigious open tournament.
- TePe Sigeman & Co Chess Tournament: He is a three-time co-winner of the traditional round-robin in Malmö, sharing first place in 2013 (with Richard Rapport and Nigel Short), 2017 (with Baadur Jobava), and 2018 (with Vidit Gujrathi).
- European Individual Chess Championship (2019): Tied for first place with Vladislav Artemiev in Skopje with 8.5/11, claiming the silver medal on tiebreaks. This performance propelled him to his peak FIDE rating of 2694.
- Tata Steel Masters (2021): Made his debut in the elite Wijk aan Zee tournament, leading the field during the first half before finishing in 9th place.
- Reykjavik Open (2023): Won the event outright with an undefeated score of 7.5/9.

Playing Style, Material Tendencies & Endgame Profiling
Grandelius is characterized as a highly dynamic, creative, and universal player who thrives in complex, concrete middlegame struggles. Rather than seeking sterile simplifications, his style is characterized by active piece play, sharp tactical vision, and a willingness to compromise his pawn structure to secure dynamic compensation.
Grandelius demonstrates a highly concrete treatment of king safety, frequently steering games toward sharp double-edged lines where both players are vulnerable, relying on deep calculation. He is comfortable operating with an isolated queen's pawn or handing over the bishop pair if it yields active, open lines for his rooks and minor pieces.
In the endgame, Grandelius is a technically precise player, heavily influenced by his training with elite coaches such as Evgenij Agrest and his work with Magnus Carlsen. He is highly proficient in rook-and-minor-piece endings, displaying particular defensive resilience and accuracy in constructing fortresses and converting minor material or structural advantages into wins.
Opening Repertoire & Theoretical Move Orders
Grandelius is an accomplished opening specialist whose deep theoretical knowledge led to his selection as a second for Magnus Carlsen's World Championship preparation teams in 2016 and 2018. He has also authored several comprehensive opening repertoires for Chessable.
1. As White
Against 1...e5, Grandelius is a leading practitioner of the Ruy Lopez (Spanish Game), favoring lines that preserve strategic tension over the forced drawish lines of the Berlin Defense. He frequently employs d3 systems to bypass the Marshall Attack. He also utilizes the English Opening (1.c4) as a flexible flank alternative.

2. As Black
As Black, Grandelius maintains a combative and theoretically demanding defensive repertoire. Against 1.e4, he regularly employs the sharp Sicilian Najdorf, while occasionally opting for the solid Caro-Kann Defense. Against 1.d4, his primary defenses are the Classical Slav Defense and the Grünfeld Defense.
