Denis Maksimovich Makhnev is a Kazakhstani grandmaster born on February 20, 2000, in Pavlodar, Kazakhstan. Representing the Kazakhstan (KAZ) federation, Makhnev was awarded the FIDE Master (FM) title in 2014, the International Master (IM) title in 2016, and the Grandmaster (GM) title in 2021. He reached a career-high classical FIDE rating of 2558 in January 2026. Denis Makhnev emerged as one of Kazakhstan's most promising junior chess talents. In 2015, he scored 8/11 at the World Youth Chess Championship Under-16 and 7/13 at the World Junior Championship. He continued his strong junior run by playing on top board for Kazakhstan at the 2016 World Youth Team Olympiad, finishing with an individual score of 5.5/8.
